Schedule YOU First

Every year, on January 1st, I feel like my year begins the same way.

I sit down with a very official-looking brand spanking new notebook, or planner, and try to map out my goals for the upcoming year.

I write down things like:

  • The weight I desire to lose

  • The dollar amount I desire to earn—and my plans for reaching it.

  • Blah, blah, blah

The weeks and months slip by so quickly. The calendar fills, I go to appointments, respond to emails, people, things, dogs, and “I’ll be ready in a minute, I just need to finish one more thing…”

I work hard. Some of my goals get achieved. My calendar is packed full of work, beautiful fulfilling work, but still…work. Work has become first. Work has become my god so to speak.

And then in the little cracks and crevices that remain I try to insert “the rest of my life.” Life gets pushed to the sideline. Life gets constricted and squeezed into a few hours here and there, a limited number of minutes between this and that.

But what if I did it differently?

What if I schedule my life first? What if I scheduled my SELF first?

What if, I asked myself instead. What experiences do I desire to have this year.

Things like:

Well here it is, the end of April and … it’s motorcycle season.

This year I am reminding myself that I am a whole person, not just a teacher, an entrepreneur, a mother, a writer, an artist or any other type of official title. I’m a whole person living in a big universe, just waiting for me to look up and see it.

Let’s help remind each other to look up.

With love,

P.S. I have 199 lovely emails that I need to reply to, but it will have to wait until tomorrow, because today I’m going on a motorcycle ride with my friends because… life first.

P.P.S. If you haven't already added it to your calendar, sign up for my self love webinar on May 4th :)
